NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE

Posted Thursday, February 14, 2008 by Robert Kalaka

What Is The NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse ?

The NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse is an organization that works with, not for, the NCAA to determine a student's eligibility for athletic participation in his or her first year of college enrollment. This pertains to any sport.

Who Should Register With The Clearinghouse ?

Any student who wants to participate in Division 1 or Division 2 college sports during their First Year of enrollment in college must register. Division 3 schools have their own requirements and you should check with that school.

When Should I Register ?

The Clearinghouse suggests that you register after your junior year. This is true and do it immediately after, you will need information from the high school before everyone goes home for the summer, you might want to start the process a month before. However I would strongly suggest that you start preparing for it now! The end of your junior year may be too late. I would suggest that you start preparing before you decide what courses you are going to take in your junior year. It comes down to Approved Core Courses and SAT or ACT scores. Not all courses you take to meet high school graduation requirements will be approved Core Courses as far as the Clearinghouse is concerned. I have heard of horror stories of a kid that did not prepare and when they got to their senior year of high school realized that they needed 2 math courses when they only had time for 1. They could not participate in sports their freshman year. I'm sure you would not like that to happen to you and neither would the college coach that was recruiting you.

What Do I Do Now ?

The first thing that you should do is get a copy of the "Guide For The College Bound Student Athelete" put out by the Clearinghouse. The Guide can be viewed/downloaded from this website through the Forms tab under the TEAMS tab on our homepage. You can also go directly to the NCAA Clearinghouse website at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net. You can also access that website through the Links tab above or below. Once you get there, click on General Information, then in the left column click on Guide for the College Bound Athelete. Save it to your computer and print it up. Depending on what grade your child is in, you should get an updated copy each year. Regulations and requirements change every year, stay current. READ IT ! In that Guide is a worksheet to keep track of what Core Courses you have completed to date. It will show you what track you are on and where you have to go.

This message is meant to make you aware of the NCAA Clearinghouse. This does not cover everything that needs to be done in the registering process. Read the Guide ! The Guide will cover just about any question
you may have. If you still have questions, call the Clearinghouse, they are very helpful or ask me, I may have the answer.
